Activation of this mode in modern smartphones is carried out by pressing and simultaneously holding three buttons: “home”, volume down and turning on the device (the mobile device must be turned off). On some older models, it is enough to hold down only the "volume -" and "on".

The main difficulty is where to ship specific objects. The hint will lie in the names themselves. For example, if the object name contains BL, then it must be inserted into the BL field, and so on.

Before pressing Start, check that all files are in their places. Wait for the inscription Pass and turn off the device.

Firmware with PIT file

Sometimes you need to repartition the memory. Odin allows you to do this, but only if you have a special PIT file. You can connect it during single-file and multi-file methods. The whole process boils down to the following steps:


Wait until the end, and then disconnect the gadget from USB. Turn on Re-Partition only if your gadget has a serious problem, when it does not boot, freezes on the screen with the model name, or memory errors are detected.

Separate software components: kernel, modem and recovery

Possible errors during the firmware and their elimination

The simplest problem is that the phone is not recognized by the program. Here you will need to install the latest version of the drivers. Sometimes the phone does not want to go into Download Mode. An alternative method is to use the ADB software. This is a special program for a computer that will help you go to the phone's system menu. If the firmware passes with errors, but the phone still works without problems, try downloading a different version of Odin. Individual Samsung are flashed only under a certain "One". We advise you to study this issue in more detail on specialized forums.

If during the firmware "One" gave the message Fail, while the device does not show signs of life, then do not panic. Follow the following procedure:

  • Remove the battery from the device. Let lie down for up to 30 minutes.
  • Reinstall the battery. Enter the recovery menu (press the power button, volume up and home at the same time). If you successfully entered the menu, click on wipe data / factory reset, and then wait for the reboot.

    Firmware is a specialized distribution kit that contains all the software components necessary for the full-fledged operation of the "gadget". Flashing a device means installing this distribution into the device's memory. And there are usually only two main reasons for firmware - updating to a new version or restoring a broken smartphone. After the firmware has been correctly carried out, we get the device in a new condition, as if from a store.


    The main reasons for flashing - updating or restoring a broken smartphone

    The flash memory of the smartphone, on which the firmware and firmware of the radio module is written, is designed for a limited number of write cycles. Therefore, you should not flash several times a day in search of the perfect firmware. When the Flash memory cannot be written, the device will have to be thrown out or disassembled into "organs".

    Types of firmware

    There are several types of firmware for Android smartphones or tablets:

    • OTA-firmware is loaded into the device "over the air", via cellular networks 3G or Wi-Fi. It contains updates to individual programs or a newer version of the Android operating system. When installed correctly, user data, accounts and installed applications are preserved. Such firmware is the easiest way to flash a smartphone, but also the most dangerous: often during this operation, the device becomes a “brick” - it does not respond to the keys, the sensor and does not display anything on the screen;
    • firmware in the form of a zip archive. It is intended for installation in the device through Recovery - a built-in "flash driver", which can be accessed by pressing a certain combination of buttons when turned on. The firmware rewrites the system partition - installed programs and accounts are deleted;
    • single-file firmware for the Odin program. Contains an operating system with pre-installed applications. As in the previous version, programs and user accounts are deleted;
    • The 5-file firmware consists of the operating system, utility firmware, and partition tables of the device's internal memory. Its installation deletes absolutely all user data from the phone's memory, including those that were on the "internal" memory card.

    Forewarned is forearmed: preparing the phone for firmware

    During the production process, the manufacturer may make changes to the design of the smartphone/tablet. Therefore, devices released at different times may differ in hardware, despite the same appearance, model name and operating system. Before flashing, you need to identify the hardware revision of your device as accurately as possible. In most cases, this can be done by checking the serial number of the smartphone on specialized forums. For example, the Samsung Galaxy Win (GT-85520) smartphone has two hardware revisions and they need different firmware.

    • firmware downloaded from the network corresponding to the hardware revision of your device;
    • smartphone drivers and the Odin program itself, downloaded from a trusted source, ideally from the official Samsung website;
    • battery charged to at least 90%;

    • a computer that is as free as possible from background processes and programs, ideally containing only the operating system and the Odin program.

    Preparing the operating system

    So, the phone is charged to the maximum, a reliable thick USB cable is found, games are unloaded from the computer and a thousand tabs in the browser are closed. It remains to do the last preparatory steps before the firmware process itself:


    Remember that a power surge in the network, a pulled out computer power cord or a power outage will lead to an emergency termination of the firmware, and the device will become inoperable - a “brick”. Therefore, connect a stationary computer through an uninterruptible power supply (UPS), and charge the battery at a laptop.

    How to flash an Android device

    Working with single-file and 5-file firmware differs slightly. The program has several buttons for selecting the appropriate firmware file:

    • BL - bootloader (loader) - load a file like APBOOT_xxxxx.tar.md5 (will be present only in 5-file firmware);
    • AP or PDA, depending on the version of Odin - the main firmware file CODE_xxxxx.tar.md5 (in the case of a single file, the only one);
    • CP or PHONE - phone radio module file MODEM_xxxxx.tar.md5;
    • CSC - file like CSC_xxxxx.tar.md5;
    • PIT - PIT file, comes with only service 5-file firmware. When you select it, the program opens additional settings for the breakdown of the internal memory of the device. The firmware with this file will delete ALL DATA on the device, and if it fails, with a probability of 99%, you will get a “brick”.

    If the firmware writing is successful, the program will write PASS in the upper left corner of the window and reboot the smartphone.

    Turn on the Re-Partition mode only in case of serious problems with the device: it does not boot, hangs on the splash screen, there are errors in the internal memory - files do not open or open with errors. Most of the devices that died during the firmware were flashed with a 5-file service firmware and troubles happened during the re-partitioning of the internal memory.     Download custom firmware

    Installing custom firmware via Odin is not the best method. The safest option is custom firmware compiled for installation from recovery. The risks of getting a "brick" are much lower than with firmware via Odin. Do not expect miracles from "customs", they will not make your old device top-end.     Installing custom firmware is no different from installing a single-file factory firmware:

    1. We press the AP or PDA button in the program window, in the window that opens, select the *.img file.
    2. In the options block, enable the Auto Reboot mode.
    3. Press the Start button.
    4. If the firmware is written successfully, the program will write PASS in the upper left corner of the window and the smartphone will automatically reboot.

    If the firmware ended with errors, the program will report this by writing Fail on a red background. But often there are situations when the firmware was successful, the smartphone went into reboot and did not come out of it. Do not panic! All the worst has already happened. Remove the battery from the device and let it rest for 20-30 minutes. Then put the battery back in place. Using button combinations, try to enter recovery (Power + VolumeUp + Home) or emergency mode (Power + VolumeDown + Home).

    It turned out to get into the recovery - excellent! We execute the command wipe data / factory reset and try to restart the smartphone. If it is possible to enter only emergency mode, we try to flash the device with a 5-file service firmware. If it doesn’t help either, the smartphone has a direct road to the service center.     1. Download the ODIN program and firmware. Unpack everything into a separate folder on drive C.
    2. Necessarily! If installed, remove Samsung Kies! I'm on my way: "Control Panel""Programs and Features""Delete".

    3. Run Odin as Administrator. The program does not require installation, so to run it, you need to right-click on the file Odin3.exe in the folder containing the application. Then select from the drop-down menu "Run as Administrator".
    4. We charge the battery of the device by at least 60%, put it into the mode Download and connect to the USB port located on the back of the PC, i.e. directly to the motherboard. When connecting, Odin should determine the device, as evidenced by the filling in the blue color of the field ID:COM, displaying the port number in the same field, as well as the inscription Added!! in the log field (tab log).
    5. To add a single-file firmware image to Odin, press the button "AP"(in versions Odyn up to 3.09 - the button PDA)
    6. Specify the path to the file for the program.
    7. After pressing the button "Open" in the Explorer window, Odin will start checking the MD5 amount of the proposed file. Upon completion of the hash sum check, the name of the image file is displayed in the field "AP (PDA)". Go to tab Options.
    8. When using a single-file firmware in the tab Options All checkboxes must be cleared except for F. Reset Time" And "Auto Reboot".
    9. Having defined the necessary parameters, press the button Start.

The process of writing information to the device memory sections will begin, accompanied by displaying the names of the device memory sections being written in the upper right corner of the window and filling in the progress bar located above the field ID:COM.     11. Upon completion of the process, in the square in the upper left corner of the program, the inscription is displayed on a green background "PASS". This indicates the successful completion of the firmware. You can disconnect the device from the computer's USB port and start it by long pressing the power button. When installing a single-file firmware, user data, unless explicitly specified in the Odin settings, is not affected in most cases.

    Installing a multi-file (service) firmware

    When restoring a Samsung device after serious failures, installing modified software, and in some other cases, a so-called multi-file firmware will be required. In fact, this is a service solution, but the described method is widely used by ordinary users.

    Multi-file firmware is called because it is a collection of several image files, and, in some cases, a PIT file.

    it means the firmware file is broken, not fully downloaded. Download again, if it doesn't help, remove the md5 extension from the file and try again.

    If you need to flash Samsung only partially, for example, you want to flash a modem, then paste the modem firmware file into the Phone. If you want to flash the kernel or then specify the file in the PDA field.
